Ways to Live a Toxic-Free Future

Ways to Live a Toxic-Free Future

A toxic-free future for our families and loved ones should be within reach, not a faraway dream!

Toxic chemicals affect one's health and environment. Children are extremely vulnerable to toxic chemicals because their bodies are still developing. Harmful exposures can come from various everyday products such as food, personal care products, furniture, toys, and clothes. Striving for a toxic-free future is the way to ensure a healthier world for ourselves, our families, and future generations.

The premise of a toxic-free future would benefit from a national effort to protect families from toxic chemicals and replace them with healthier alternatives. Replacing toxins for safer products through awareness, consumer purchasing, advocacy, research, and grassroots organizing are significant steps to achieve the goal. Every action we take should be to protect one's health, family health, and the health of our planet from harmful chemicals and pollution. We are all in this together!

Let's review some toxins of concern:
  • PFAS chemicals are a global threat to humans and wildlife. PFAS is a poly- and perfluoroalkyl substance found in drinking water as a result of industrial releases and from firefighting foam. PFAS can be found in various products, from popcorn packaging, dental floss, and food packaging to water-resistant and stain-resistant fabric and furniture. The major fast-food chains are still serving up takeout food in PFAS packaging.
  • Flame Retardant Chemicals are dangerous and can affect the endocrine, immune, reproductive, and nervous systems. They can cause certain cancers and are brain-harming toxins found in furniture, electronics, and building materials. Ask your school or childcare center if they use foam nap mats that are flame retardant.
  • Glyphosate is a herbicide used in agriculture, forestry, and garden care that targets grasses and weeds by blocking the enzyme essential for plant growth. Another toxic herbicide contains arsenic, monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA), calcium acid methanearsonate, or cacodylic acid. Check the labels before using either one of these herbicides.
  • Pesticides are toxins used to kill insects and weeds and used in agriculture and the home. Choose organic produce to reduce the toxic load from your food supply whenever possible.
  • Heavy metals like mercury and arsenic can be found in food, so choosing low mercury fish is especially important for young children and anyone pregnant, nursing, or of child-bearing age.
  • Phthalates, the fragrance carriers, and plasticizers in consumer products contain PVC (polyvinyl chlorides and are found in children's toys and personal care products like perfumes and shampoos. Check children's scented personal care products to see if they contain phthalates.

Take a personal inventory of everything in your home environment and estimate the toxic level exposure. Awareness brings change. Finding healthier alternatives brings you one step closer to a toxic-free future.

The good news is that we can take appropriate steps to protect ourselves and the environment from these toxins.

Here are some helpful tips:
  • Avoid PFAS, phthalates, and flame retardant products.

  • Use toxin-free alternatives for pest control, garden, and lawn care.

  • Use non-toxic personal care products.

  • Avoid toxic art supplies by choosing safer art and craft Supplies; look for the Non-Toxic seals from the Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI).

  • Avoid contaminated clothing. When researching clothing or textiles, look for certification programs such as GOTS and OEKO-TEX®. They label garments made of textiles that were manufactured responsibly.

  • Choose organic whenever possible for your food and beverages.

  • Read labels on food products and beverages.
While reading labels for healthier products, you will find that KidsLuv Vitamin Enhanced drinks have Zero Sugar, are Certified Non-GMO, Vegan, and Kosher, and are offered in resealable, recyclable, straw-free packages. We are doing our part.

Remember, it's worth the research and effort to live a healthier, toxin-free lifestyle!
